Abstract

Board-foot volume gives a good measure of the merchantable wood capital in a reserved stand left after selective cutting but not of its growth potential. The latter depends primarily on the amount of stem cambium, which can best be measured by bole area. The following article illustrates the usefulness of bole area in predictions of future growth and shows how it may be determined for single trees or stands.
