Abstract

A composite site index is presented which permits comparison on a common basis of stands of mixed species composition. Basal area and total cubic volume of unmanaged stands are related to age and site index. Estimated current annual net increment for 65-year-old stands is 46 cubic feet per acre, with a range from 23 to 77 cubic feet per acre, according to site quality. In terms of diameter growth of dominant trees, white ash is most sensitive to differences in site quality, and yellow birch least, of the species studied.
