Abstract

This pioneer cleaning study was established in 1923 near Looking-Glass Rock on the Pisgah National Forest to determine the feasibility of liberating suppressed yellow-poplar. Standing volumes at age 51 are presented for cleaned and uncleaned plots, as are periodic increments which ranged from 834 to 1,429 board feet per acre per year--from age 34 through 51. The study shows that Southern Appalachian timberland can regenerate successfully after clearcutting followed by fire even without cleaning.
