Abstract

Late in 1974 the U.S. Department of Agriculture activated the Combined Forest Pest Research and Development Program to provide technology for minimizing intolerable losses from the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis (Zimm.), Douglas-fir tussock moth, Orgyia pseudotsugata (McD.), and gypsy moth, Porthetria dispar (L.). Participating are departmental agencies, state agricultural experiment stations and forestry organizations, universities, and industry. This is the first time an interagency research program has been administered directly from the office of the secretary of agriculture. Significant progress has been made during the first three years.
