Abstract
Federal forestlands contain prehistoric and historic sites important to an understanding of human culture and behavior. Managers have responsibility, clearly stated in law, for protecting the sites from damage by vandals or from incidental harm by forestry activities. They are beginning to see that the responsibility is not so much a constraint as an opportunity to serve the public.
