Abstract
The Northern Region was the first in the USDA Forest Service to provide continuing education for and certification of silviculturists. Classes have been held yearly since 1973; a cycle of instruction consists of three four-week sessions. The Pacific Northwest Region followed in 1978, with a cycle of six two-week sessions. Both programs were planned in close coordination with universities, which provide the classrooms and most of the teachers. Instruction is on the graduate level, emphasizing physical and biological principles and their application in practical silviculture.
