Abstract
An assessment of rural communities in Inland Northwest forests, completed for the Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project, reveals that although their populations and economic base are changing, many towns are less dependent on natural resources than their citizens believe. Economic diversification is one measure of resilience to change, and towns whose leaders are preparing for future change have the best chance of expanding opportunities for their residents.
