Abstract

A practical magnetic resonance flowmeter has become available for the measurement of blood flow rates through the leg. This paper summarizes one of the author's experience with a prototype and with a second unit built for clinical use. Work done in other centers is also described. The measurement of blood flow rate has improved the evaluation of percutaneous transluminal angioplasties and of diabetic patients; leg flowmetry has altered concepts related to resting flows in claudicants and to changes in peripheral resistance with progression of arterial occlusive disease.
