Abstract
Misdiagnosis of calf hematomas as deep venous thromboses (DVT) and the consequences of subsequent anticoagulation are not uncommon and require timely correction to avoid serious injury to the patient. Six patients with calf hematomas (CH) were initially diagnosed with DVT and were subsequently anticoagulated. All patients experienced persistence or progression of their symptoms, prompting further workup.Operative intervention was necessary in 5 of the 6 cases. The importance of prompt diagnosis and thorough initial duplex examination to avoid a compartment syndrome is highlighted. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are useful diagnostic tests when patients fail to improve with standard therapy for presumed DVT.
