Abstract

Recent Joint Commission surveys indicate that some organizations still have questions about appropriate patient identification processes prior to transfusion. Blood transfusion errors can have fatal consequences, and many transfusion errors can be avoided if patients are properly identified. For this reason, National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) NPSG.01.03.01 requires that hospitals, critical access hospitals, ambulatory care organizations, and office-based surgery practices eliminate transfusion errors related to patient misidentification.
