Abstract

The experimentally observed level structures which appear to support the newly proposed magnetic rotation phenomenon in weakly deformed nuclei are classified according to their intrinsic structures and other measured properties such as B(M1)/B(E2) values, lifetimes, etc. A total of 120 magnetic dipolerotational bands are observed in 56 nuclei spread over four mass regions, namely, A = 80 (Z = 35–37), 110 (Z = 48–51), 135 (Z = 54–64), and 195 (Z = 80–86); 42 such bands are observed in Pb isotopes alone. Interpretation of these bands in terms of shears mechanism and other possibilities are briefly discussed. A number of high-spin features such as signature splitting, signature inversion, and backbending are also discussed. The literature cutoff date for the data is August 1999.
