Abstract

The induction of pink and colourless mutations in the stamen hairs of the Tradescantia clone KU9 has been studied following exposure of cuttings with inflorescences to X-rays, ethylmethane sulphonate (EMS) and combinations of the radiation and chemical mutagen. The results demonstrate a synergistic interaction between the radiation and the chemical mutagen for both somatic mutations. Such synergism has implications for acceptable levels of radiation exposure and needs further investigation.
