Abstract

The effect of several glycosidases and proteases on lectin binding to Heterodera schachtii males was investigated. Treatment with galactose oxidase modified PNA binding, suggesting the terminal occurrence of D-galactose in the amphid exudate. The proteases α-chymotrypsin, trypsin and pronase E affected HPA binding on the amphid and excretory pore exudates and on the cuticle (only pronase E), indicating their glycoprotein nature. Enzymatic attack was only possible after the nematodes had been washed intensively in ultrapure water.
