Abstract

Power outages can have a range of ramifications for an organization, from a minor annoyance—if their duration is short and emergency backup systems are functional—to a significant disruption, especially if the length of the power outage surpasses an organization's emergency backup power capabilities. This article discusses how St John's Hospital in Maplewood, Minnesota, worked to minimize the likelihood of such disruptions by meeting with the local power company as well as being prepared to respond quickly to an outage if it did occur.
