Abstract

Generalisations are made from numerous data obtained by investigating systematically such dilatometric glass properties as the glass transition temperature Tg, the thermal expansion coefficient TEC, and the structural thermal expansion coefficient STEC for the systems RO–B2O3 and RO–Al2O3–B2O3 (R=Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) in wide concentration areas covering the glass formation regions of the systems under study. It has been shown that although concentration dependencies of the properties look complicated in these systems, for example, they have extrema and saddle points; they resemble one another in these systems with different alkaline earth cations. This similarity in the dependence of a considered property on composition indicates similar anion network changes taking place in the systems. In terms of the results of direct structural investigations it allows evaluation of some structural rearrangements occurring in them. Since glass anion networks are alike in these systems with different cations, the intensity of a given property is determined by the nature of a given cation.
