Abstract
A direct-device, i.e., no sine bar, grating drive has been built and characterized. The use of a microprocessor controller allows the system to be calibrated easily. Once calibrated the system demonstrates precision and accuracy that are as good as theoretically possible given the gearing and stepper motor selected. The lack of a sine bar mechanism also allows the grating to be rotated to very high angles. Wavelength scans with the use of a single grating are demonstrated.
