Abstract
This paper presents the findings of long term monitoring and inspection of 33 operating in-ground biofilters in the United States and Canada. The objective of this paper is to identify and correct common design mistakes, outline efficient operation and maintenance guidelines, and develop an effective monitoring program. It is important to note that one design does not fit every application; however, avoiding the common mistakes will greatly increase the performance of a low cost — in-ground biofilter.
