Abstract
The launch of the elementary school portion of the Public Education Program in November 2007 was the result of a little more than two years of work by Drainage Services. Focusing on the drainage system, the program includes two teachers’ guides: one for Grade 4 (Treat it Right! Wastewater) and the other for Grade 5 (Treat it Right! Storm water). The program focuses on teaching children how to change the daily actions that have a negative affect the storm water and wastewater systems and ultimately on the environment. The goal is to promote long-term, behavioral change. Linking to the Alberta Education Program of Studies, the program integrates science, mathematics, language arts, and social studies as appropriate to the grade level and the content. The program has been well accepted by the teaching community with teachers reporting that the program fulfilled all of the requirements of the unit/topic they were teaching.
