Abstract

Education for technical professionals is discussed. Goals for primary/secondary education, for university education, and for industry education are hypothesized and their relationship to the maturation of engineers is defined. A 'knowledge goal model' is described, and the maturation process is mapped onto the model. Some conclusions are drawn from the mapping, and implications for university and industry educations are drawn. This paper is intended to stimulate some thought on the part of educators in both academia and in industry. Well-planned, cooperative efforts between these educators are needed to sustain the competitiveness of industry in today's world economy.
