Abstract

During our study of the orbiliaceous fungi and their anamorphs, a specimen of Hyalorbilia was collected and isolated, its anamorph was obtained in culture. Characteristics of both teleomorph and anamorph are different from any other known species of the group. The teleomorph was found on decaying broad-leaved twigs in Beijing, China. Apothecia are 0.1–0.3 mm diam. and bear a short stipe. Asci and paraphyses are embedded in a strongly gelatinized matrix. A pure culture was isolated from the ascospores. Its conidia are narrowly fusoid, borne on simple, short conidiophores. The anamorph is placed in the genus Dactylella according to its conidial morphology. We compared the ribosomal DNA ITS sequence of the isolate with that of the similar Dactylella oviparasitica, the homology identity of these two fungi is only 71% in ITS1 but they form a monophyletic clade in parsimony analysis. The morphologically similar Vermispora fusarina is more distantly related. Based on the combination of morphology and DNA sequence analysis, we describe the teleomorph as Hyalorbilia brevistipitata and its anamorph as Dactylella brevistipitata. This is the first evidence for Hyalorbilia-Dactylella connection.
