Abstract
The edge effect of an infinite strip of locally reacting absorber material within an acoustically soft wall is considered, a problem relevant in certain hydroacoustic applications. A general method for numerical solution of the problem, and an analytical solution for the long-wave limit are presented. Numerical calculations of the absorption efficiency exhibit a typical resonance-like behaviour in the case of absorbers with spring-type impedance. The associated excess absorption, caused by waves generated at the edges of the strip and guided along the absorber surface, is greater than in the equivalent problem of absorbers on a rigid wall. Resonances of that type can presumably be used to increase the absorption in certain frequency intervals as compared to a full-area coating.
