Abstract
This paper presents a comparison between calculated and measured radiation from a guitar. One unusual feature of the guitar under examination is the presence of a soundpost. The radiated sound pressure is predicted from measurements of the normal velocity of both the top and back plates. The sound hole velocity is calculated by means of an approximated low-frequency model. Previously developed methods for unbaffled structures, essentially based on FFT algorithms, are now extended for calculating the sound pressure radiated by hollow structures with several planar vibrating faces. Measurements of directivity patterns are carried out in an anechoic chamber. Comparisons between measured and predicted directivity show that, at some frequencies, the radiated field is primarily due to the top plate, whereas, at other frequencies, the directivity cannot be predicted correctly without taking the vibration of the back plate into account.
