Abstract
One of the important sub-components of spatial impression in concert halls is associated with the apparent broadening of the sound source (e.g., an orchestra) beyond its optical size. While this is thought of being an important attribute of concert halls, there is no agreement about which objective measure is best suited for predicting it. In the present paper, the ability of three candidate measures, namely LFE4, IACCE3 and RL′E, to predict ASW in listening tests with synthetic sound fields consisting of the direct sound and up to 8 reflections, is investigated. The results of these tests suggest that out of these three, RL′E should be preferred. In order to apply this result to hall design, two further steps will be required: The effect of diffuse reflections must be studied in future listening tests and more precise calibration techniques must be developed.
