Abstract

The scientific publications of Axel Leonard Melander (June 3, 1878 - August 14, 1962) totaling 168 titles were published over a period of 65 years. This article presents a list of these publications and also provides a list of the 1,118 names proposed by Dr. Melander for both fossil and recent Insecta and Arachnida. Outstanding among Dr. Melander's publications is his monumental work on the family Empididae in the series Genera Insectorum (1928). The books, Key to the Families of North American Insects (1915a) and Classification of Insects, A Key to the Known Families of Insects and Other Terrestrial Arthropods (1932, reissued 1946) written with Charles T. Brues, and later revised with Frank M. Carpenter as third author (1954) are very widely used in Entomology. He was also the author of the very useful Source Book of Biological Terms (1937b, 1940d).
