Abstract

I briefly trace the evolution of the Experimental Lakes Area project from its beginning as a temporary site sponsored by the now-defunct Fisheries Research Board of Canada, with the sole mandate to investigate the effects of nutrients on lake eutrophication, to its current status: a permanent field station cosponsored by the Canadian Departments of Environment and Fisheries and Oceans, with a mandate to investigate the aquatic effects of a wide variety of stresses on lakes and their catchments. Throughout, experiments have been designed to address important aquatic management issues, but this mandate has not hindered the production of pure research on a broad variety of issues.Cet article retrace brièvement l’évolution du projet de la Région des lacs expérimentaux depuis son début comme site temporaire sous le patronage de l’ancien Office des recherches sur les pêcheries du Canada avec seul mandat d’étudier les effets des nutriments sur l’eutrophisation des lacs, jusqu’à son statut actuel, soit une station de terrain permanente soutenue conjointement par les ministères canadiens de l’environnement et des pêches et océans, avec mission d’évaluer les effets aquatiques d’une gamme étendue de facteurs de stress sur les lacs et leur bassin versant. Durant toute cette période, des expériences ont été conçues afin de faire face aux problèmes importants de gestion des milieux aquatiques; ce mandat n’a, cependant, pas entravé la production de recherche pure sur un large éventail de questions.
