Abstract

Lead metatantalate was prepared by solid-state reactions in the PbO–Ta_2O_5and PbCO_3–Ta_2O_5systems. The process was followed by differential thermal analysis and x-ray diffraction. The solid-state synthesis of PbTa_2O_6was found to proceed through the formation of the cubic pyrochlore phase 3PbO · 2Ta_2O_5 . The red PbO resulting from PbCO_3decomposition is more reactive with Ta_2O_5as compared to yellow PbO. As a result, during continuous heating, the ferroelectric phase of PbTa_2O_6forms at a 50°C lower temperature.
