Abstract

Differential thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction, and microstructural analysis were used to map out the Tm–Bi phase diagram. The Tm–Bi system contains two compounds, Tm5Bi3 and TmBi. Tm5Bi3 forms peritectically at 1690 ± 15 K; TmBi melts congruently at 2010 ± 20 K. Two eutectic reactions are identified in the Tm–Bi system: at 1410 ± 10 and 541 ± 5 K. The composition dependences of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and thermoelectric power are consistent with the phase-diagram data.
