Abstract
A non-magnetite surface layer has been found on magnetite nanoparticles prepared by chemical precipitation from Fe(II) and Fe(III) salt solutions containing an excess of an alkali. The formation mechanism of the non-magnetite layer and the effects of the nanoparticle size and reaction medium on its thickness have been investigated.
