Abstract
This paper sets out to show how Japan's official development assistance (ODA), also known as foreign aid, together with direct overseas investments of multinational firms, has been instrumental in energizing the economies and altering international trade patterns of East Asia. The coordination of government aid with private-sector investments is the key to productive results, as well as an emphasis on human factors in technology transfer which targets the development of human resources through strong inter-personal contact. These have led to sustainable economic development via integrated production systems and viable export programs in this highly dynamic part of the world.
