Abstract

This review summarizes data on expression regulation of the eukaryotic ribosomal protein genes at the level of splicing, including data obtained by the authors. In particular, the roles of ribosomal proteins in regulation of the splicing of their own pre-mRNAs are discussed. Special attention is paid to the molecular mechanisms underlying this process and the interactions between the ribosomal proteins and their own pre-mRNAs and mRNAs. In addition, the potential critical consequences resulting from disturbances of the mechanisms regulating synthesis of ribosomal proteins are considered. The special role of autoregulation in maintaining the normal level of ribosomal protein biosynthesis is underlined.
