Abstract

This paper presents the mathematical basis of a method for generalising linear cartographic data. The method is based on the transformation of the parameters of a digitised curve into a set of pseudo-hyperbolae such that no point lies outside a tube of given error tolerance ε.The method has been programmed in the Fortran IV language for test purposes, and examples of the programs' results are given. The method should be of interest to those working in digital cartography who seek a method of data reduction which is both mathematically rigid and cartographically sensible.
