Abstract
To improve the surface quality of continuously cast steel, a new method is proposed by imposing a multielectromagnetic field from the outside of a mould during continuous casting. To investigate the effect of the electromagnetic field on the meniscus shape, a static simulation experiment was conducted, in which molten Wood's alloy was used to represent molten steel. Experimental results for the continuous casting of steel billets show that when the multielectromagnetic field is imposed, the consumption of mould flux increases; the initial solidification position is lower and the shell becomes more uniform than that without a multielectromagnetic field; and steel billets free from surface defects can be obtained by the application of a multielectromagnetic field without mould oscillation.
