Abstract

A new type of lightweight mirror billet with excellent dimensional stability was prepared by connecting γ-TiAl and K9 glass through solid diffusion bonding with Ti6Al4V foil as an interlayer. The Ti6Al4V layer was used to reduce the thermal residual stresses generated in the glass due to the mismatch of coefficients of thermal expansion between γ-TiAl and K9 glass. The surface of Ti6Al4V foil was oxidised in order to connect the K9 glass. After the preparation of the mirror billet, the TiAl/Ti6Al4V interface and the Ti6Al4V/glass interface were studied by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The results show that both the interfaces are bonded well. Moreover, the mirror billet was subjected to thermal shock tests for 20 cycles between 25 and 400°C, which indicates the mirror billet has excellent thermal shock resistance.
