Abstract
BET surface area measurements were made on rapidly solidified AA 2014 powders produced by inert gas atomisation. The surface area values were found to vary from 80 to 287 m2 kg−1, depending on the mean size of the powder. Theoretical surface area values were calculated from size distribution data obtained using a Malvern 3600D particle sizer, and were correlated with the BET measurements. Actual surface area values were greater than the calculated figures by ~33% over the size range examined (Sauter mean diameter range 10·1−26·7 μm). This corresponds to a high Wadell sphericity factor of 0·72 which is in agreement with the generally spherical shape of the particles observed in SEM. PM/0473
