Abstract

The sliding wear resistance of nitrided and carburized 18HGT low alloy steel cylindrical specimens was determined in 'taper-three roll' tests against 45 grade steel counter specimens. Specimens to be nitrided were hardened to 28 HRC before nitriding at 530°C for 6 h, whereas the carburizing treatment was at 930°C for 6 h followed by direct hardening and tempering. The wear characteristics were determined at the surfaces of the hardened specimens and after grinding to various depths within the diffusion layer. Hardness–depth profiles were also obtained and the layer microstructures were examined by SEM. In general, the two types of specimen showed similar wear resistance, although the nitrided steels performed better at low surface pressure (50 MPa). Seizure or accelerated wear was observed at pressures of 400 MPa and above. The surface zones showed higher wear resistances than the zones deeper in the hardened layer.
