Abstract
The Hendrik Verwoerd Dam is the principal storage dam of the Orange River Project. At full supply level the water impounded by the dam wall imposes an additional load of over 5 billion metric tons on the earth's surface. This large mass of water has altered the gravitational field of the earth, causing local changes in the shape of the geoid in the vicinity of the dam. These changes have been calculated. The method which was used is described, and the results which were obtained are presented and discussed.
