Abstract
The estimation of map areas has various connections in different fields of study. Its importance stems from the fact that it has both scientific significance and considerable economic impact. The published measuring techniques are either time consuming and dependant on researcher judgment, or simplified and their accuracy can be improved. The proposed slice method can be used to estimate the area and periphery of an irregular area in one operation. It subdivides the area into slices by rotating an axis from a centroid. It utilises simple trigonometry to calculate the arc and area of an individual slice then performs nonlinear regression to obtain the total periphery and area. The slice method was effectively used to calculate the shorelines and areas of the continents of Australia and Africa and producing errors of less than 5%.
