Abstract

A STRUCTURE is, or at least should be, the result of purposive design. It is there-fore rational and the principles of its functioning should be apparent after a little study. Its purpose is to carry certain types of load and its 'appreciation' consists in unravelling all the various ways in which it can achieve its purpose. The appreciation of structures is largely a matter of experience, but the following lines of attack are often useful.
