Abstract
Since the use of helicopters over water has become wide-spread, the U.S. Federal Aviation Agency and the British Civil Aviation Authority have developed new regulations for flotation capabilities and ditching operations. These requirements and the design and testing of flotation landing gear systems are discussed. Differences in flotation systems pertaining to cost, weight, efficiency, and capability are presented, including differences in their supporting systems; such as, float, inflation, and actuation system designs. Model tests used to verify the capability of the designs are also discussed. Flotation and ditching model tests, methods, and scaling laws are described.
