Abstract

Wilh existing helicopter lifetimes being extended further and further by commercial use via service life extension programs (SLEP) and modernization prrograms, low-frequency, high-amplitude cyclic loads (Ground-Air-Ground (GAG)/trip cycle) are having an increasing impact on component lives. This is particularly true for drive system components. This paper presents an approach to establish S-N curve shapes, covering the full range of cyclic loading, including GAG/trip cycle loads to be used for the life calculations. Nondimensionalized S-N curves and constant life diagrams are presented for typical helicopter aluminum and steel alloys. The main focus of this paper is to identify a means to permit generation of families of full range S-N curves, using only a limited number of high-cycle fatigue tests.
