Abstract

Light exposure in imbibed state increased germination of freshly harvested Parthenium hysterophorus L. seeds to 68% from 8% in the dark. Dormancy breaking chemicals including GA3, ascorbic acid, ethrel, thiourea, β-mercaptoethanol, kinetin, indole acetic acid (IAA), potassium nitrate, sodium azide and chlorine increased or resulted in maximum germination of the seeds in the dark substituting for illumination. However, with time the dark germination increased by 3 months to maximum by 7 months.
