Abstract

To limit environmental pollution, state agencies are developing and enacting very stiff standards for the acceptable content of harmful substances in the air. Observation of these standards will to a great degree be a function of the content of toxic substances in emissions from motor vehicles, which are also rigorously regulated by legislation. Many of the requirements imposed on gasolines are exclusively aimed at reducing environmental pollution. The acceptable content of unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons in gasolines, sulfur compounds, antiknocks, and C3 and C4 light hydrocarbons that especially markedly affect atmospheric pollution by fuel vapors is regulated by these requirements in addition to the requirements for the engine and operating conditions [1].
