Abstract

The vertical drawn by D. K. Chernov on the Fe – C phase diagram on November 10, 1916 is the boundary between hypo- and hypereutectic steels having different genealogy of structural components (δ ⇄ γ, γ ⇄ β, β ⇄ α, and γ ⇄ α respectively). An attempt is made to associate substantial effects (the extrema and inflections at about 0.5% C on the curves of variation of the properties of austenite, martensite, and ferrite-cementite mixture as a function of the carbon content) with changes in the genealogy of the structural components.
