Abstract
Measurements of the stress in lead dioxide deposits formed anodically on a nickel substrate are reported for acid lead nitrate electrolytes. In simple acid electrolytes, the electrodeposit is compressively stressed, high stress is favoured by low [Pb2+]. The effect of additions of organic acid anion is pronounced; depending on the concentration of the organic anion, stress may be partly or completely relieved. Addition of sufficient organic anion causes a reversal of the stress from compressive to tensile. The results may be interpreted in terms of adsorption at the electrode.
