Abstract
2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) is a constituent of certain flotation collectors, and there is a need for determination of MBT residuals in flotation plant liquors.UV absorbance measurements at 310 nm in alkaline solution showed that Beer's law held up to 12 ppm MBT. At 323 nm in acid solution Beer's law held up to 9 ppm MBT.Measurements of MBT concentration in alkaline solution showed that most common flotation reagents and inorganic salts did not interfere. However, xanthate and cresylic acid interfered, because they had an absorbance at 310 nm. In acid solution MBT is stable, and the interference of xanthate and cresylic acid is overcome by measuring absorbance at 323 nm.Cuprocyanide interfered in alkaline or in acid solution when more than about 20 ppm cuprocyanide was present. Sulphite interfered in alkaline solution because it reacted with MBT. It is essential to use a perfectly clear solution.
