Abstract
This review of the literature has identified several important lessons that can be used to inform future use of handheld computers for work based assessment of healthcare professionals. Handheld devices have high user acceptance and offer advantages over paper-based systems. A current major limitation has been technical, but this is likely to be resolved in the near future. The potential use of handheld devices appears to be limited by the degree of acceptance by all users, and it is important that the identified barriers are considered before any introduction of handheld devices for work-based assessment.
