Abstract

One of several tableau scenes within the Marquis de Sade's Justine ou les malheurs de la vertu is the infamous incident at the convent Sainte-Marie-des-Bois. The scene represents one of duplicity in which the heroine is deceived on many occasions, from what she sees, what she thinks she sees, to what really is. This article understands the duplicitous tableau scene at the convent as one that represents the Lacanian Real of psychoanalytic theory. The narrated tableau scene also presents the main character, Justine, as the female rien of psychoanalytic theory traveling freely across France.
