Abstract

Starting with the categories recently outlined by Alexander Kluge, on occasion of rewriting the keyword 'war' for republishing of Diderot and D'Alembert's Encyclopédie, edited by Hans Magnus Enzensberger in 2001, my paper analyses some of Kluge's work concerning the relationship between war and media. Special emphasis is put on Schlachtbeschreibung (1964), which focuses on the battle of Stalingrad. After 40 years, Kluge's hermeneutic categories can still be considered valid, also for interpretation of following wars. It is only in this way that the seemingly contradictory structure of Chronik der Gefühle can be explained: the two-volume work published in 2000, which includes Kluge's previous work and newer productions of the last decade. In fact, Schlachtbeschreibung is the only old text among new ones in Vol. I. In the last section of my article, I have taken into account some of Kluge's most original ideas developed soon after September the 11th
