Abstract

During his lifetime Karl Philipp Moritz was a successful English teacher and also a successful writer of English learning materials for Germans. Nevertheless, his Englische Sprachlehre für die Deutschen (1784) has remained almost completely unknown among scholars. This paper provides an overview of the contents of this book, analyzes its didactic and linguistic conception, and considers what the target audience might have been. At the end of the eighteenth century, Germans considered English to be a difficult language to learn. By choosing a contrastive approach and by pointing out the similarities between English and German grammar, Moritz tries to convince his readers of the contrary. Moritz's idea is not only to facilitate the learning process but also to encourage his readers to reflect on the relationship between language and cognition. According to Moritz, the study of language not only enables learning about the structure of the language itself, but also provides a possibility to learn more about the faculties of the soul.
