Abstract

The various international occurrences of surrealism are often approached as reproductions, failed or successful, of a French archetype. A characteristic theme in this approach is the question of politics, where political engagement is said to be registered by particular political affiliations or by the presence of specific textual genres typically connected with political organizations - manifestoes, pamphlets, etc. However, surrealism's conception and image of the political surpass such narrowly focused criteria; likewise, its international diversity shows that the political investments of an avant-garde movement should not be identified with more familiar forms of mobilization. Greek surrealism's entanglement with political questions provides a telling example.
